What is asbestos?

Asbestos is the name used to describe a variety of mineral fibres that are prepared as sprays, pastes, woven sheets and piled fibre. From the 1950s to the 1990s, it was used in many Canadian homes because of its excellent insulating and fire-resistant properties.

Where you might find asbestos in your home or building
  • As backing on older linoleum flooring and floor tiles
  • Sprayed-on fireproofing on structural supports, beams and walls
  • In mechanical insulation found on pipes, boilers and reservoirs
  • Drywall mud or taping compound
  • Vermiculite attic insulation
  • Asbestos cement board and tiles (used as pegboard, heatshields or blackboards)
  • Textured coating on walls
  • Asbestos-cement pipes

If you think any of these materials might be present on your premises, call JAD Environmental Services. Our Calgary asbestos abatement technicians will test the materials in question for asbestos content and return to you with an estimate for an abatement plan.

Asbestos is dangerous

Health Canada is very clear on the matter: inhaling asbestos fibres or dust can cause cancer and other illnesses. Consequently, if you’re the owner of a Calgary home, apartment complex or commercial building, your chief responsibility is to make sure any asbestos found on-site is either safely isolated or thoroughly removed through an abatement process.

Note that if it’s properly contained, asbestos doesn’t pose a significant health threat. However, if disturbed in any way, asbestos fibres are released into the air. When inhaled by residents or building users, it’s a major health liability.

Removing asbestos from your home or building

When you’re doing renovations on a building that was built or renovated between 1950 and 1990, you may inadvertently disturb asbestos in the walls, floor or ceiling. In such a situation, it’s highly recommended to have a licensed abatement technician test the materials for the presence of asbestos.

Asbestos removal should only ever be done by a licensed abatement contractor like JAD Environmental Services. Call us today for testing or for an abatement plan. We remove asbestos safely and dispose of it according to the law. That’s the kind of assurance you need when it comes to your home and business.
